Houston Roughnecks Edge Tampa Bay Vipers 34-27

The Houston Roughnecks remain perfect on the season after edging out the Tampa Bay Vipers 34-27 in Week Three.

Houston’s charge was led by quarterback PJ Walker, who continues to dominate the gridiron. Walker completed 67 percent of his passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Walker finished the day with a quarterback rating of 120.8. He also rushed four times for 34 yards and a score, giving him four all-purpose touchdowns on the day.

Cam Phillips continues to be Walker’s go-to receiver, as he was targeted 10 times, hauling in eight of those for 194 yards and three touchdowns.

Taylor Cornelius led the Vipers at quarterback, throwing for 193 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He completed 52 percent of his passes and finished the afternoon with a 68.3 quarterback rating. Cornelius split quarterbacking duties with Quinton Flowers, and although Cornelius had the only passing touchdown of the day for the Vipers, only the two quarterbacks registered the only rushing touchdowns of the day for their team.

Both men rushed for one touchdown each. The defenses, aside from the interceptions, were relatively quiet, as the game featured heavy offense from both teams. Despite the Vipers’ valiant effort, they couldn’t get the job done against Houston. Now, the Roughnecks improve to 3-0 on the season, while Tampa Bay is now 0-3 and yet to register a victory. Next week, Houston will travel to Dallas for a game against the Renegades, while the Vipers host the streaking DC Defenders.
