XFL Commissioner and CEO Oliver Luck has been making the media rounds this week to talk about some of the plans for the relaunch in 2020.
During an interview with ESPN 710 AM Seattle, Luck was asked about the league’s position on players that come with some level of baggage. Some of you may recall that league owner Vince McMahon said earlier this year that they did not want to sign anyone with a criminal record. Luck said this week that that the league will draw the line and some players will not be considered.
“Vince [McMahon] has made it pretty clear to me that he not only wants to see good football players but he wants good football players that are good character guys,” Luck said. “I think we’ll have absolutely a bright line and not take guys who are involved in any sort of domestic violence issues.”
Luck said that McMahon has made it clear that he wants players who can be good role models and not guys who have a track record with bad behavior.
This rule extends to all players, including star NFL players. Luck said, “On a domestic violence front [with] Kareem Hunt, that would not be an individual that we would want in our league. He wouldn’t have an opportunity based on what I understand he’s done.”
The league also aims to stay away from politics. “People don’t want social and political issues coming into play when they are trying to be entertained,” McMahon told ESPN back in February. “We want someone who wants to take a knee to do their version of that on their personal time.”
League policies on domestic violence and other issues will likely be announced in the next few months.
