Ex-Giants OC Kevin Gilbride will be the head coach for XFL New York franchise

The XFL has announced Kevin Gilbride as the head coach of the league’s New York franchise.

Gilbride was a member of the Giants coaching staff for 10 seasons. He was the quarterback coach from 2004 to 2006 and became the offensive coordinator in 2007. The team won two of their most recent Super Bowl championships with Gilbride as part of the staff. He is credited with getting more out of quarterback Eli Manning than any other coach or coordinator.

Gilbride retired at the end of the 2013 season. His only prior head coaching experience was with the San Diego Chargers in 1997 and 1998.

The news of his hiring was announced in a press conference in New York City.

The XFL franchise in New York has yet to be named but logos and team names are expected in the next few weeks. Commissioner Oliver Luck said the league expects to announce a broadcast agreement.

The league will relaunch in February 2020.
