Chad Johnson Backs Out Of XFL Tryout

Chad Johnson

It looks like former NFL star Chad Johnson (also known as Chad Ochocinco) has backed out of his tryout with the XFL.

Johnson had previously expressed interest in trying out for the new football league as a kicker. He posted a video of himself on Instagram kicking a 60-yard field goal and even talked on Twitter about potentially playing a full season with the XFL before getting back to the NFL at a completely new position.

“Pretty far fetched but imagine me being consistent during an XFL season & getting a chance at a 53 man roster in the NFL, even i don’t make it just being able to compete for a spot at a entirely different position will be so riveting”

However, according to a report from ESPN, Johnson did not participate in his scheduled tryout on Monday (January 20, 2020). The 42-year-old alerted the league the night before that he wouldn’t be participating. Johnson was set to be evaluated alongside several other kickers for XFL spots.

The six-time NFL pro-bowler has talked about playing football on-and-off-again for the past several years, most notably as a kicker. He does have some experience kicking at the highest of levels, as Johnson kicked a bit for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009. Johnson converted on an extra point and even kicked off for the Bengals during the pre-season.

Although Johnson did not show up, former New Orleans Saints kicker Garrett Hartley was signed to the league.
